Yoruichi Wig Tutorial 2009

*Hello All!* Welcome to the Yoruichi Wig Tutorial! I hope this will help you in how to create a wig from scratch. Personally this was my first wig and it didn't turn out too badly. This is also my first tutorial so please be patient. I tried to take as much photos as I could, but some parts I skipped. Not to worry it should still be helpful in which every way you apply these techniques. Hope it helps and hope you enjoy!

[Yes, I know the colour looks pink but IRL it's a light purple]
Things you will need:
  • Packs of hair/ wefts (I personally used 3)
  • Foam Head (Preferably male seeing as female head is kinda small)
  • Thread (Matching/ close to hair colour)
  • Mesh (Matching/ close to hair colour)
  • Strong glue (I used glue gun)
  • Styrofoam cup
  • Yoruichi hair scrunchy
  • Straight pins
  • Curved needle/ Normal large needle (Easier to sew with)
  • Permanent markers (one matching the hair, one black or dark colour)
  • Scrap material (For flaps if your mesh is thin)
  • Clips, elastic bands and rubber band
  • Curlers (with blow dryer) or hair straightener or curling iron (Low heat setting please!)

*Step 1- Making Mesh hat*

  • With Elastic measure the size of your head.
  • Make sure it goes around the head snug (not too tight) and covers hairline.
  • Pin ends together then sew securely.

*Step 2- Fitting Mesh*

  • Using foam head, place mesh over head and paper clump (to have room for hair).
[I doubled (put two layers) because my mesh was kind of thin. If you get a thicker mesh (ex. laundry mesh) you don't have to double.]

  • Put the elastic to secure in place. Put pins on the elastic going around the head to keep it in place. Bast Mesh to the elastic.
*Step 3- Head/ Back flaps*

  • Try on mesh hat, if it doesn't fit properly make adjustments where needed
  • When you reach desired fitting, measure where you need to put on you side burn and nape flaps,
  • Using some more mesh, cut out flaps to cover side burns and nape
[ I chose to sandwiched an other piece of material between my mesh because I thought it was kind of flimzy]
  • Place where marked then sew everything on securely

*Step 4- Start sewing on hair*

  • Place mesh hat back onto foam head and pin securely
  • Start sewing hair on bottom of side burn flap and stop half an inch past elastic
  • Keep sewing row until you reach top of the head
  • For every row you sew from bottom to top, let the rows gradually get longer but not extending too much near head back region

[I added marker guide lines about an inch apart to keep me on track]

*Step 5- Sectioning bangs*

  • After sewing frontal bangs, section then out according to how Yoruichi sections hers
  • Separate The bangs into 6 parts (3 for each side)
[2 for front straight parts, 2 for curled portion, 2 slightly smaller sections to cover side and go into ponytail eventually]

  • Put away the 2 parts for the back ponytail securely (I braided mine to keep them out of the way)
  • Separate the side curl sections with clips

*Step 6- Styling the bangs*

  • Cut the front straight bands on an angle (long in the front going gradually to shorter in the back)
[I personally cut my bangs then used a razor comb to get them thinner towards the ends]

  • Cut the curl section slightly shorter than the straight portions in the front
  • Divide them into "Top and Bottom" curl areas
  • For the curled section there are different options depending on what you have selected to use. I will go threw all of them:
1. With the blow dryer + curlers
  • Put one curler on the top curl section rolling upwards
  • Put one curler on the bottom section rolling upwards aswell
  • Use the dryer on low setting as not to burn/ melt the hair
2. Hair straightener [Method I used]

  • Put straighter on *low heat*
  • Used a practice piece of hair to see what is the appropriate temperture for hair to be curled without burning/ melting

[I started out low (chi straightener) but eventually got to 120 degrees without burning or melting the hair]

  • Starting at middle of the section, curl the bottom portion and slowly glide downwards then curling up at the ends
  • Follow same procedure with top curl section
3. Curling iron

  • Used curling iron on *low heat*
  • Use a practice piece of hair to see what is appropriate temperature for hair to be curled with out burning/ melting the hair
  • Starting at middle of the section, curl the bottom portion hold it there touching the outer hair to make sure its warm
  • Follow same procedure with top curl section
*Step 7- Finding the ponytail section*
  • With styrofoam cup, place where desire for ponytail high
[Yes, mine was a little off :(]
  • Trace dotted line with markers around the cup to show where you will place the ponytail

*Step 8- Making the ponytail*

  • Used the styrofoam cup, glue hair around the bottom of cup
  • Make rows going to middle of cup
  • Cover remainer or cup with Yoruichi scrunchy

[I glued about 4 rows ( to middle of cup) until it started feeling a little heavy]

*Step 9- Start sewing back ponytail area*

  • Using pins, pin hair (hair pointing towards the middle) around the area designated for the ponytail
  • Sew on securely

*Step 10- Stubbing*

  • Once hair is sewn on, use rubber band to hold securely in place then cut off end of the hair ponytailed to a stub
  • Put glue all over stub and this will be the basis for the ponytail
  • Once dry, continue sewing rows about an inch apart and stubbing each row until the whole back area is covered with hair
  • Due front section one row is need to to finish it (Leave that part for the last step)

[This process takes kind of long but I was happy with the end result *nods*]

*Step 11- Sewing back side/nape flap*

  • To finish the back side/ nape flap, sew hair along the edge of wig + nape
  • To clean finish, sew hair on the inside of the wig edge and pull up using blow dry to train the hair to point upwards.

[I personally didnt fully do the clean finish. I did the side edged but I skipped the back flap but it didn't look bad. I just coloured the edges and you can't really notice.. Shh!]

*Step 12- Top area*

  • To finish the top, sew a row of hair making an arc from the side bangs to the other side

[You could also chose to clean finish the raw edges by: 1. leaving a little space between the bangs area and back ponytail cover area

2. Sewing a row or hair pointing toward the bangs inbetween those 2

3. Then use the blow dryer to train that to point towards the ponytail area, gather the hair with elastic, then stub.]

*I did not do this, I chose to leave the raw edges and colour them with marker. Doesn't look bad/ noticable*

*Step 13- adding the ponytail (Final Step!) *

  • Once everything is neatly stubbed and covered, you may add the ponytail
  • Use glue to securely add the cup to the stubbed area

[For more security, I glued on the inner edge of the scrunchy and stuck it too the hair]

There you have it!Your very own Yoruichi wig! Yay!It may have took a while but the turn out good!
